Christmas ornament workshop
Workshop Overview:
Participants will create two ornaments — one a finial ornament with a sea urchin center, and a second design to be determined. Beginners can opt for a simpler, spindle-gouge ornament project with instruction provided.
All materials and tools (sea urchins, wood, finish, glue, etc.) are supplied — just bring yourself. Lunch will be at noon and extra turning time after lunch will be available to finish projects if needed.
Cost: $25 (materials included).
Optional Lunch: $10 (homemade pulled pork BBQ with sides).
Limit: 10 participants — reservations required. Please indicate if you’d like to be included in lunch.
ClearWater Arts Center and Studios Annual Holiday Market
Join Southern Piedmont Woodturners (SPW) as we team up with ClearWater Tenant Artists, the Cabarrus Art Guild, and other local artisans and artists for a day of live woodturning demonstrations, art sales, and community fun!
Our studio will feature ongoing turning demos and a sales table showcasing original handcrafted wood art by SPW members. A food truck will be on-site, so grab lunch or a snack, explore nearby studios, and discover why woodturning has evolved from craft to fine art.
Pen Making Workshop
Participants will learn the ins and outs of making turned wooden pens. The mentors will first cover the equipment, tools, and fixtures needed to make pens, including the pen kits themselves, related costs and where they can be purchased. The participants will then start at the very beginning, going through all the steps needed to make and assemble the pen blanks prior to actually going to the lathe. Because some of these steps require time for glues to set, fully assembled blanks will also be provided so that the participants can then get to the lathe and begin turning. Once the blanks have been turned and finish has been applied, they will then assemble the pens. It is anticipated that each participant will make two pens to take with them, plus they will have the blanks that they assembled and an additional pen kit to take with them to complete at another time. All materials and tools are provided. Lunch will be at noon and extra turning time after lunch will be available to finish projects if needed.
Cost: $35 (materials included).
Optional Lunch: $10 (homemade Italian roast beef with sides).
Limit: 10 participants — reservations required. Please indicate if you’d like to be included in lunch.

Ikebana Spikey Flower Bowl Workshop
The demonstration for the morning meeting will be presented by Jim Duxbury on making his Ikebana Spikey Flower Bowl. Following a break for lunch, there will be a workshop on making the same, which is an eccentrically turned base that holds a spiked cup to receive and hold flowers. We have some exceptional wood for this event – some Ambrosia maple, Padauk, and a few pieces of black walnut for the participants to choose from. This day, we believe, will provide an exceptional meeting, demonstration, and follow on workshop. Join us for a lot of fun, learning, and creating a truly outstanding art form.
Cost: $45 (materials included).
Optional Lunch: $10 (Pizza).
Limit: 10 participants — reservations required. Please indicate if you’d like to be included in lunch.
February 2026 Regular Monthly Meeting
Join us for our Regular Monthly Meeting at the ClearWater Arts Center and Studios, where members gather to immerse themselves in the art of turning, share projects, and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts. At a typical meeting, a guest woodturner provides a demonstration on some aspect of woodturning. Demonstrators may be from other regional clubs, national turning professionals, or experienced turners from our own club. Topics vary widely and might feature the proper use of a specific tool, making a specific turned item, equipment maintenance and use, and other similar areas of interest. For the February meeting, the demonstration will be "Canoe Cup x2", provided by our own Lan Brady. For additional information on Lan and on the demonstration, please go to the information provided for a workshop on the same topic, which will be held in the afternoon after the meeting.
Just like all our gatherings, if you're feeling unwell or exhibiting any symptoms of illness, we kindly request that you stay home. Many of our members are part of high-risk groups, and safeguarding everyone's health remains a top priority.

January Regular Meeting
The January regular meeting will be held on January 24, 2026 from 9:00 through approximately 11:30 am, noon latest. After a short business meeting, Jim Duxbury will provide a demonstration on making an Ikebana Spikey Flower Bowl. As is the normal custom, we will take a break about halfway through the demonstration for refreshments and our usual club raffles. Jim will then complete his demo, after which we will have Show and Share. Please bring you latest masterpieces to share with the others. In the afternoon, starting at 1:00, we will have a members-only workshop on the same turning topic, turning an Ikebana Spikey Flower Bowl. See separate calendar event to register for the workshop.
January 24 meeting and workshop are on
We have been following the weather forecast for the past couple of days, and after taking the weather forecast under consideration, have decide there is no reason to cancel the monthly SPW meeting scheduled for this Saturday (January 24). There is a consensus from the weather experts that precipitation will not begin until Saturday evening, 7-8 PM as it stands now. Given this prediction, we are comfortable with going forward with the demonstration led by Jim Duxbury. Jim is an awesome turner and presenter and is travelling a couple of hours to get here for the demo. We are hopeful that we can give him a full audience to support his efforts. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy the morning with a fresh cup of coffee and a donut (both of which will be available at the studio) and learn how to turn a really interesting off-center ikebana flower bowl. So set your alarms early and we’ll see you at 9:00 AM Saturday morning. Doors open, with coffee ready, at 8:30.
We’ll make a final decision about theafternoon workshop after the morning meeting, but it looks like this event will go forward as well. And, we will keep our eye on the weather during the workshop. If it looks like it is starting to turn for the worse, we can discontinue and gather at a later date to finish the project – absolutely not a problem. We have some beautiful wood blanks and spiky holders ready for all those who have signed up for this event. It should be great fun, plus, you will take home an outstanding art form made from some great woods. And, we still have a couple of turning slots available, so just go to the website and sign up. It promises to be a great workshop.
See you Saturday,
Larry Nottingham
Canoe Cup 2x Workshop

Following the meeting, starting at 1:00 in the afternoon, Lan will lead a workshop on the same topic. This will replace the 4th Saturday Open Turning, so you can reserve your spot by selecting the 4th Saturday option at the Reserve My Spot option below. The workshop will run from 1:00 until 4:00. There will be adequate time between the meeting and the workshop for lunch, so either bring lunch or order out at your preference.

March 2026 Regular Monthly Meeting
Join us for our Regular Monthly Meeting at the ClearWater Arts Center and Studios, where members and guests gather to immerse themselves in the art of turning, share projects, and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts.
For this meeting, the demonstration will be divided between a number of members, each showing how to turn a different, relatively simple item that can be turned in fairly short order. The emphasis here is on simplicity and speed yet resulting in something that is both attractive and functional – for example, bud vases, salt and pepper shakers, and candlesticks. These are the type of turnings that are popular at craft fairs and therefore should be of interest to anyone wanting to pursue selling their art in this way. For our purposes, though, the objective is to incentivize members to start turning in support of our biggest fundraiser, the Cabarrus County Fair. The meeting will be followed in the afternoon by a “Support the County Fair Turnathon”, during which members can turn the same forms as those demonstrated in the morning in support of the fair. This should be a very fun way to spend a day, working toward a common goal alongside fellow woodturning enthusiasts. Bring a lunch and spend the day.
Just like all our gatherings, if you're feeling unwell or exhibiting any symptoms of illness, we kindly request that you stay home. Many of our members are part of high-risk groups, and safeguarding everyone's health remains a top priority.

Support the County Fair Turnathon
This turnathon workshop will follow directly from the demonstrations provided during the regular meeting held earlier in the day. For that meeting, the demonstration time will be divided between a number of members, each showing how to turn a different, relatively simple item that can be turned in fairly short order. For our purposes, though, the objective is to provide our members with a fun way to turn in support of our biggest fundraiser, the Cabarrus County Fair. This should be a very fun way to spend a day, working toward a common goal alongside fellow woodturning enthusiasts. Bring a lunch and spend the day. Wood will be provided by the club, but if you have some wood that can be used, bring it along. Just consider the type of forms that we will be turning and plan blank species and sizes accordingly.
Space is limited and we can accommodate only so many turners. So, it is important that you register early to save a spot on a first come, first served basis. This workshop is in place of the Fourth Saturday Open Turning, so you can reserve a place by selecting the Reserve My Spot option below, filling out the form, and then selecting the Fourth Saturday option. The workshop will start at 1:00 and can end when the participants want to call it a day. There will be adequate time between the meeting and the workshop for lunch, so either bring lunch or order out at your preference. While the morning meeting is open to the public, the afternoon workshop is members only.
Cabarrus Arts Council Art Walk on Union
In addition to our regular meeting and Turnathon workshop on March 28, Southern Piedmont Woodturners will also support the Cabarrus Arts Council at the Art Walk on Union. We will have turners at the event demonstrating woodturning to the public, as well as open doors at the studio to provide visitors with the opportunity to see our members in action. Both venues provide the opportunity to promote woodturning as an art and craft to the general public. It should be an interesting and fun day.
