April 2026 Regular Monthly Membership Meeting
Join us for our Regular Monthly Meeting at the ClearWater Arts Center and Studios, where members and guests gather to immerse themselves in the art of turning, share projects, and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts. John K. Jordan (not to be confused with the John K. Jordan that passed away in 2023) will provide the demonstration for this meeting. For those who attended the NC Symposium last year, you may remember John’s display in the pop-up gallery – a very large and diverse display of turned items. John is an excellent turner from the Knoxville, TN area and is especially skilled with the skew chisel. His demonstration will focus on skew skills, and we’ll see him turn some of his Harry Potter style wands and other thin-spindle items as well. John will also attend the afternoon turning session, so anyone wanting to learn skew skills should find this an excellent learning opportunity. The handouts he distributes to describe the details of his instructions are second to none. For those interested, we will order carry out lunches, or bring a lunch and spend the day.
Like our request for all gatherings, if you're feeling unwell or exhibiting any symptoms of illness, we kindly request that you stay home. Many of our members are part of high-risk groups, and safeguarding everyone's health remains a top priority.
Are you curious about SPW but not yet a member? Drop by and explore the benefits of joining our vibrant community.
Whether you're investigating the craft to see what it is about, a novice seeking to improve your turning skills or broaden your turning portfolio, or a seasoned veteran, our meetings provide a welcoming space for all.
May 2026 Regular Monthly Membership Meeting
Join us for our Regular Monthly Meeting at the ClearWater Arts Center and Studios, where members and guests gather to immerse themselves in the art of turning, share projects, and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts. At this meeting, fellow SPW member Bill Stricker will provide a demonstration on making his three-legged stool. Bill is an expert at using a skew chisel and will use the skew to make the stool legs during his demo. Bill will also present a tutorial on the use of the skew chisel later in the day during our afternoon workshop. He will provide several exercises and will assist the participants in completing them as a part of the process of learning the proper us of a skew. Following the tutorial, the participating SPW members will turn the Harry Potter wand that John Jordan made during the demo at the April meeting.
Just like all our gatherings, if you're feeling unwell or exhibiting any symptoms of illness, we kindly request that you stay home. Many of our members are part of high-risk groups, and safeguarding everyone's health remains a top priority.

June 2026 Regular Monthly Membership Meeting
Join us for our Regular Monthly Meeting at the ClearWater Arts Center and Studios, where members and guests gather to immerse themselves in the art of turning, share projects, and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts. For this meeting, Larry Nottingham will provide a demonstration on turning a Celtic Knot French Rolling Pin. Much of the work to be performed to complete this project involves preparation of the blank to embed contrasting sections of wood that will form the Celtic knot once turned, and there is more than one way to skin a cat. Larry will show two different approaches. And even though the final turned shape is fairly simple, and it is spindle turning, there are a couple of tricks that the turner should be aware of that will make the project easier to accomplish with typically a superior result.

Cannon School Arts Jam Woodturning Demonstrations
Southern Piedmont Woodturners will once again this year provide woodturning demonstrations at the Cannon School Arts Jam on the afternoon of April 25. Stop by to meet our woodturners and enjoy watching them turn spinning tops, which will be handed out to the kids. The event is a lot of fun and we look forward to seeing you there.
Spindle Turning Workshop With John Jordan
John Jordan is a well-known woodturner from the Knoxville, TN area. During our regular membership meeting held on the morning of April 25, John will provide a demonstration on the use of a skew chisel to make his signature Harry Potter wands and other spindle-turned items of interest. His demonstration will concentrate on the proper use of the skew chisel. In the afternoon, starting at 1:00, John will join us for a workshop during which we will replicate his Harry Potter wands and other interesting projects as time allows. The workshop will conclude around 4:00.
The proper use of a skew chisel is one of the fundamental skills that all woodturners should master. Optimally, this should be one of the first skills addressed in learning the craft because a good, fundamental understanding of the skew chisel translates into other areas of woodturning and to the use of other tools. Yet, many experienced woodturners shy away from using the skew. This workshop should therefore be of interest to those new to the craft, to the experienced woodturner who has not yet mastered the skew, and even those who have used the skew successfully but need a refresher. So, come and join us for a workshop that should be a great learning experience as well as a lot of fun. A fee will be required for this workshop to partially offset John’s travel and living expenses and the costs of the supplies used during the workshop. We are not providing a lunch option for this workshop, but take-out lunch will be ordered for those interested at the time, or feel free to bring lunch. In any case you can share some quality social time between the meeting and workshop socializing with fellow club members. The workshop is limited to a maximum of 10 active SPW club members, and spots will be reserved on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Did you reserve a spot for this fourth Saturday workshop? Here's how to register and pay your workshop fee, which covers class supplies and helps offset travel costs.

Studio Cleaning
Woodturning, by its very nature, is a messy business, spreading wood shavings and wood dust far and wide. We try as best possible to keep up with it by cleaning up after each event, but over the course of a year, dust and shavings accumulate in places typically not touched during the regular cleanings. So, once a year we have a major cleaning effort. This year we will undertake this activity on July 18, 9:00 am - noon. Many hands make labor light - come out and help - it is your club and we should all take pride in keeping it in a shape suitable for entertaining visitors at any time. Ten is a minimum number of members that we need to accomplish everything within 2-3 hours, but more help never hurts and just allows everyone to go home earlier. And, in addition, like all opportunities for members to get together, the studio cleaning also provides for some socializing with fellow members. Hope to see you there. Phil Goodman has volunteered to lead the efforts and requests that anyone willing to help let him know so that he can make sure he has the necessary support for the efforts. Thanks for volunteering.
Pen Making Workshop
Participants will learn the ins and outs of making turned wooden pens. The mentors will first cover the equipment, tools, and fixtures needed to make pens, including the pen kits themselves, related costs, and where they can be purchased. The participants will then start at the very beginning, going through all the steps needed to make and assemble the pen blanks in preparation for setting up at the lathe to turn them. Because some of these steps require time for glues to set, fully assembled blanks will also be provided so that the participants can then go directly to the lathe and begin turning. Once the blanks have been turned and a finish has been applied, participants will then assemble the pens. It is anticipated that each participant will make two pens to take with them, plus they will have the blanks that they assembled earlier and an additional pen kit to take with them to complete on their own at another time. All materials and tools are provided. The workshop will follow the regular monthly meeting held the morning of the same day, and participants will be on their own for lunch. An order will be placed for takeout sandwiches and workshop participants can take advantage of this or provide lunch otherwise as they choose.
Here's how to register and pay your workshop fee, which covers class supplies.
Cost: $35 (materials included).
Lunch: On your own with option to be included in takeout order
Limit: 10 participants — reservations required.
