Workshop on Turning and Decorating Weed Pots

Start Date: 07/25/2026
End Date: 07/25/2026

Start Time: 01:00 PM
End Time: 05:00 PM

After the business portion of our July meeting, Ric Erkes will provide a Weed Pot Demonstration and then afterwards lead a hands-on Workshop.  Whether you call them weed pots, bud vases, or miniature vessels, these small projects are simple, fun to turn, and a great way to sharpen your skills.

Ric plans on showing not just one way to turn a pot but several different approaches.  How about with or without a chuck, pre-drilled or drilled on the lathe, using different tools to do the same job, and multiple ways to part/turn off the bottom.   He’ll also demonstrate a few texturing ideas, adding color dyes, and using liming wax to dress up ‘boring’ Oak.  Though the demo item is a weed pot, these techniques can be used on many of your project ideas!

We’ll break for lunch following the meeting, and then the fun begins at 1:00.  The club will have texturing tools, dyes, and liming wax available, along with Oak and Maple blanks.  Let’s see how many pots we can turn in an afternoon.   You can keep what you turn, but for every pot donated for the Fair, Ric will match one for one up to 20.  That’d be 40 ready to go for the Fair!  And if we get 10 lathes going, that’s only two apiece!

There is a small fee of $30 for this workshop to offset the cost of materials.   This is not only a great skill-building session, but also a fantastic opportunity to hang out and support our club!

Folks, this is truly a win-win – a great demo, a workshop led by one of the best, and a way to support the club by making a matched-gift weed pot for the good of the club.  Come out and share in the fun.
