Monthly Meeting with Darryl Jones
Darryl Jones will be our April demonstrator and I like his message, “Dread Knot and make something!” Meaning; just take it a step at a time and amaze yourself at what you can do.
You may have seen Darryl demonstrating at the Klingspor Extravaganza or any of a number of Woodworking shows representing various manufacturers. He is a professional woodworker/turner from Spartanburg SC. He joins us this month in studio doing a hollow form with finial. Darryl will be emphasizing tool control and proportions.
You can check out Darryl’s work on Facebook and Instagram. @dreadknotwoodshop
As always it is best to experience the demonstration and gallery live in the studio, but if you can’t make it will be on Zoom.

Join us for our Monthly Meeting at SPW @ Clearwater Studios, located at 223 Crowell Dr NW, Concord, NC 28025 (at the top of the long black stairs).
Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting you are not required to be a member.
At these gatherings, you'll have the opportunity to connect with fellow woodturning enthusiasts who share your passion. Woodturners are known for their generosity in sharing knowledge and techniques, making our meetings a valuable learning experience for all.
We open our club doors half an hour before the meeting starts, allowing time for socializing and getting to know your fellow club members. Visitors are always welcome, and we frequently have guests of all ages (over 10 years old, for safety reasons) joining us.
At 6:30, our President kicks off the meeting with a warm welcome and a brief update on club news and activities. Each meeting features a skilled demonstrator showcasing their turning expertise, providing valuable insights and inspiration for attendees.
During the break, we enjoy snacks and participate in our raffle. Members contribute items or wood to the raffle, and tickets are available for purchase. This is an excellent opportunity for new turners to acquire different wood varieties for their projects.
After the meeting concludes, everyone pitches in to clean up and tidy the space, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility.
Don't miss out on this enriching experience! Join us for our Monthly Meeting, where you'll learn, connect, and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow woodturning enthusiasts.
Monthly Meeting
SOUTHERN PIEDMONT WOODTURNERS
TIM TUCKER
“CORING CAN BE THE SOLUTION!”
Sometimes you just have a nice piece of wood, and you don’t want to waste any of it. Coring can be the solution. Instead of turning a bowl and putting most of it on the shop floor, coring out the inside can sometimes yield several extra bowls. Tim Tucker is the current president of the Carolina Mountain Woodturners and will be demonstrating how to core a large piece of wood.
Please pay your 2024 dues as soon as possible. You may visit our website and go to the bottom of the first page and click pay my dues or if you would rather, you may mail a check made payable to SPW in the amount of $55.00 to Cindy Boehrns 11922 Glen Hope Lane Charlotte, NC 28269. Please, don't mail them to me as I must then mail them to Cindy.
TOPS, TOPS, AND MORE TOPS AND MORE TOPS!
Did I mention TOPS?
We are asking for everyone to turn 3 tops per month in preparation for the 2024 Fair, multiple school, and civic events, and assistance with turning tops for 2024. The requests and interest in tops have greatly increased. It will be great if everyone can get their tops turned by the end of August.
Tuesday, May 21, 2024, 6:30pm
Join us at 6:00pm for Social Time!
It is always best to experience the demonstration and gallery live in the studio, but if you can’t make it, it will be on Zoom.

Calabash bowl with Emiliano Achaval
Turning and repairing a traditional Hawaiian Calabash Bowl
Early Hawaiian woodworkers made what we now call Calabash bowls for Kings and Chieftains. Calabash bowls are famous for their continuous curve and rounded bottoms.
This month we will be featuring Emiliano Achaval turning a Calabash bowl. He will be coming straight to our studio (via satellite) from Maui, Hawaii. Emiliano is a professional Woodturner who turns primarily Koa wood, native to Hawaii. In addition to turning a calabash bowl, Emiliano will discuss its history, and how to make the traditional repairs using Pewa or butterfly patches on cracks.
While this month’s meeting will be a remote demonstration, please join us in the studio as usual for some turning camaraderie. Don’t forget to bring in what you’ve been turning for our show and share.
