Hello, I’m Larry Nottingham and welcome to my personal woodturning gallery. My work as a woodturner is rooted in a lifelong connection to wood, first through carpentry, then evolving to furniture making and other flat work, and finally venturing into woodturning around 2009. Whether turning or working with flat stock, though, my focus has always been the same: the wood itself and bringing out its natural beauty. To me, it’s all about the wood. I especially enjoy working with highly figured wood and the instant gratification that comes when a finish is applied to a truly exceptional piece of wood and, as they say, it “pops.” And, one of the neatest aspects of woodturning is venturing into the unknown by turning into a piece of wood and finding those treasures hiding inside. In my turning projects, I enjoy variety and continually study and explore new tools, techniques, and forms. Currently, my work is focused on segmented turnings and deep hollowing. One picture in my gallery, the one showing two segmented stave vases that are hollowed to a uniform wall thickness throughout, provides a glimpse of my progress. I believe this gallery reflects the diversity that has kept me engaged with the art and craft of woodturning over the years. I hope you enjoy it.
