Bob is a long-time member of and contributor to Southern Piedmont Woodturners. But Bob’s contributions to woodturning extend far beyond our club. He has supported and helped multiple woodturning clubs throughout North Carolina and has taught woodturning at an arts school near his High Point home. And for many years, Bob has been a woodturning instructor at the prestigious John C. Campbell School in Brasstown, NC.
For the September meeting, Bob demonstrated the basics of turning a platter. In medieval times, most folks had their meals severed on a bread platter, but the wood-turned platter became a much-improved alternative and eventually that was replaced by clay and pewter. But in this century, thanks to woodturners like Bob, the wood-turned platter has again become a decorative and practical way to serve food at special occasions.
The feature picture for this demonstration shows Bob along with Phillip Cooley holding the platter that Bob turned. He donated the platter for a October turner of the month raffle, which was won by Phillip.
