Beginner Woodturning and Safety Class

Agenda:
On Saturday Steve Martin will be teaching Lathe safety, tool identification and the parts of the lathe. You will learn how to mount your wood in spindle or end grain orientation as well as the use of the spindle roughing gouge, the spindle gouge, and the skew. He will also demonstrate the sharpening of these tools and you will be turning a spindle project.
On Sunday Ric Erkes will be teaching bowl turning. This will include tool identification, use, and sharpening of bowl gouges and you will turn a bowl project.
Tools: You may bring your own or use the club’s tools. Lathes and tools must be inventoried and signed out by the student. Make note of any empty spaces and missing tools.
Priority will be given to:
Beginning woodturners who are SPW members.
If you are not a beginner but feel like you could use a refresher class you may also enroll.
Safety: We request that all students be fully vaccinated.
- A full face shield is provided with each lathe and must be worn.
- Long hair must be tied back.
- No loose long-sleeved shirts.
- Rings, watches and jewelry must be removed.
- Closed toed shoes must be worn.
Lunch at the studio: Bring your own lunch or pizza can be ordered in at a shared cost.
Refreshments: Coffee & soda are available at the club.
After Class Clean-up:
All Lathes will be cleaned and tools will be sharpened before being put in the proper cabinets. Equipment will be checked in and signed off by the instructors.
All students will assist with clean up after the class (no exceptions).
A group photo of all participants showing their completed projects will be taken and posted to the SPW website. Please bring your completed project for the next “show & tell.”
