The bowl shown in the feature picture for this newsletter is from Darrell Rader’s collection and was made by renowned turner and original president of the American Association of Woodturners, David Ellsworth, who passed away recently.

Recent club activities in October included a Christmas ornament workshop on November 1 led by Ric Erkes with assistance from Steve Lusk and Darrell Rader. Eight participants attended, each completing an ornament and enjoying a productive session.

Upcoming events include a Pen Making workshop on December 6, along with the ClearWater Arts Center Holiday Market the same day featuring 41 vendors. The annual Christmas Party will be held December 16 at Captain Steve’s in Harrisburg.

Beginning in January, meetings will shift to the fourth Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to noon, with the first session on January 24. Jim Duxbury will demonstrate his Ikebana Spikey Flower Bowl.  A workshop will follow on the same topic, giving participants an opportunity to create this outstanding form using premium woods such as Ambrosia maple, Padauk, and black walnut.  Additional information is available at the club website calendar, where participants can register for the workshop.

At the October meeting, John Johnson of the Waxhaw Woodturners demonstrated a “Split Bowl,” sharing techniques, embellishment methods, and practical tips. The meeting also featured the revival of the Turner of the Month raffle and a diverse Show and Share that included works by Darrell Rader, Ric Erkes, Harold Kemplen, and additional split bowls from John and his sidekick, Joe Giannina.
