The November 19, 2024 Southern Piedmont Woodturners (SPW) meeting, was attended by 16 members and three guests, with others joining remotely.  The meeting was led by President Phil Goodman, who opened with updates on several members’ health and remembrance of longtime member Walt Keifer.

Phil again emphasized the need for a Vice President, club photographer, and mentors for open turning sessions. Dues for 2025 will be collected in January ($55), and members are encouraged to contribute items for monthly raffles.

A major discussion centered on relief efforts for Western Carolina residents impacted by Hurricane Helene. Donations of nonperishable food, hygiene items, clothing, tools, and cash (for charities such as the Red Cross or the Southern Highland Craft Guild’s GoFundMe) are being collected at the SPW studio on December 14. Members are also referred to an American Woodturner article by Christine Smith for more information on affected woodturners.

The ongoing “Tops for Kids” challenge continues year-round to replenish depleted supplies for local events and missionary efforts. Members are asked to turn at least three tops monthly.

Upcoming events include the ClearWater Art Center’s Holiday Market on December 7, where SPW will participate and may sell leftover fair items. Member works by Phil Goodman, John Bartles, and Larry Nottingham will also be displayed at Atrium Health Cabarrus Hospital for up to a year.

The annual SPW Christmas Party and gift exchange will be held December 17 at Captain Steve’s Family Seafood Restaurant in Harrisburg. Members and guests are invited to bring a hand-turned wooden gift if they wish to participate. RSVP to Phil Goodman by December 12.

Finally, members Ric Erkes, Phil Goodman, Bill Truit, Vince Keiper, and Larry Nottingham refurbished lathe cabinets with new hardware, improving functionality and preparing for further upgrades.
