The March–May 2025 edition of the Southern Piedmont Woodturners (SPW) Newsletter recaps three regular meetings held at the Clearwater Arts Center and Studio, with updates on club business, member news, and engaging demonstrations.
March 2025 Meeting:
Held March 18 and attended by 17 members and guests, the meeting was led by President Phil Goodman. Phil renewed his call for volunteers to fill the vacant Vice President, club photographer, and mentoring positions. Members were reminded to pay annual dues ($55) and to contribute raffle items. The evening’s demonstration featured Jim Duxbury, who presented his invention, the Dux Chuck—a versatile device for eccentric or off-center turning. Jim showcased how it can be used to craft medallions, pendants, and other artistic, non-circular pieces.
April 2025 Meeting:
On April 15, Phil Goodman again presided. Members were saddened by the passing of Ron Briggs and shared condolences. Upcoming events included the Cabarrus Arts Council breakfast (May 16) and a demonstration at Cannon School (April 26), with volunteers requested. Members were reminded of the ongoing “three tops per month” initiative to support fairs and community events, and of the April 30 deadline for the Cabarrus Art Guild spring show. Officer elections are planned for July, with leadership continuity depending on filling all vacant roles. The meeting’s demonstration, From Collar to Finial, was given by Ric Erkes, who shared advanced turning techniques for enhancing vessels with collars and finials, including design tips, fitting methods, and creative spiral carving.
May 2025 Meeting:
Members were encouraged to explore the updated SPW website, pay outstanding dues, and begin crafting items for the Cabarrus County Fair. The month’s demonstration, What Time Is It?, was presented by Claude Shealy, known for his finely crafted wooden clocks, highlighting the artistry of timekeeping through woodturning craftsmanship.
