The July 2025 SPW Newsletter opens with a message from the new president, marking his first meeting in the role. He reflects on the challenges of leading a larger, more structured organization like SPW compared to his previous experience with a smaller, informal club. Unlike his former club, SPW operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, manages a budget, rents studio space, seeks grants, and participates in major events such as the County Fair and the NC State Woodturners Symposium.

He expresses gratitude for having a knowledgeable and experienced Board of Directors, noting that all positions are now filled and that no major changes are anticipated. His primary goals are to strengthen member training and rebuild membership to pre-COVID levels.

The newsletter also recognizes outgoing president Phil for his eight years of dedicated service. Phil not only led SPW but also served as president of several other clubs and even ran for city council twice. Though stepping down, he will continue to coordinate the County Fair, advise the Board, and manage club equipment and transportation. In appreciation, Phil received handcrafted turnings by members Ric Erkes and Larry Nottingham, along with restaurant gift certificates.
