Introduction to Segmented Woodturning

Have you ever seen one of those segmented vases with thousands of pieces and wonder, “How in the world?”   Well, you have to start somewhere and that is what this month’s demonstrator, Gary Janes, is going to show us.  Gary received a degree in mechanical engineering and credits Edd Pfau and Dave McKeithan from the Waxhaw club with getting him started in the world of woodturning, and with John Walsh, Rick Erexson and others influencing him along the way.

Segmented turning is a world of its own, but Gary plans on breaking it down to the basics of how to get started.  Such as, how to make consistent cuts, how to put the segments together to build the layered rings and open vs closed segments.  He’ll be doing some turning, but most importantly bringing his cutting jig and samples of his work to discuss the process.

This will be an in Studio demo so come out and join us and don’t forget Ric Erkes’s challenge and bring your tops!
